Hope you are keeping well yourself Eugene. Peter is doing fine, he had a few days in hospital last week, but is very well right now. Will ring you soon.

Your comments at Tommy's funeral were lovely and so heartfelt. Oh how I remember the old "Harp and Bard" in Danvers. Sometimes so crowded that you had to crawl over the tables to get a good seat. Many fond memories of Tommy and Liam there. God Bless we will never forget Tommy as long as his music is played and sung all over the world. You carry on the traditon. Take care

Dear Eugene,

On the evening of June 24, 1974 I was privileged to record you and Tommy at the Harp and Bard in Danvers. Part of the concert was broadcast on WGBH Radio.

Like your music, the tapes have survived the test of time and I hope one day soon to share them with you and the Makem family.

With kindest regards and sympathy to you for the loss of a dear friend and magnificant human being.

Hello Gene,
I found you while I was looking for news on poor tommy Makem's death and there a big burden on you now to continue the tradition. Last time I saw and heard Tommy was with yourself in Glassboro, New Jersey on the night Bush invaded Kuwait. I'm saddened by the loss but he brought great joy to so many of us. I heard his boys here in Honolulu last March but the father can't be beat. It would be good if you came West sometime because I recall you in your younger days in Danvers (Harp and Bard I think) and you'd be appreciated. Condolences on the loss of your friend and same to the sons. Ar deis De a anam. Brian.

August 3, 2007.
Robert Frost once wrote "Every poem starts with a lump in your throat". There is a large lump in many people's throats right now, and it is due to the fondness many people have for the humanitarian by the name of Tommy Makem. Being a distant relative of this unique Irish clan, and a friend of Eugene's doesn't make it any easier. The poet, songwriter, scholar, musician, and friend, by the name of Tommy Makem is not gone, he just isn't present at this moment. But his legacy lives on through spirit, music and song.

Having lived in Montana for 39 years, my roots and connections continue to draw me back to Dover(NH) and the Emerald Isle.

I know I speak for all the Irish people of Montana and especially Butte, America (a place where once more Gaelic was spoken in the early 1900's than on the streets of Dublin)when I say Tommy Makem will not be forgotten--he is just out there traveling, and those that know him, will always be able to hear his resonating Irish music for decades to come. What an honor it has been to have experienced the likes of Tommy Makem.
